Art Exhibition - 'Symposium'

Date: Saturday, 16 August 2014 - Sunday, 31 August 2014
Time: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Location: Wollombi Cultural Centre, Wollombi NSW

“Symposium” is an exhibition of new paintings and drawings by fifteen artists of the Valley New Art Group including works which are original, imaginative and diverse in style and media. Abstract, figurative and mixed media art, ranging in size from intimate to large scale, are represented.

As senior artist, Stephen James explains, “Symposium is inspired by the philosopher, Plato’s classical text ‘The Symposium’. Socrates meets with fellow Athenians for a drinking party or symposium to discuss philosophy and life. It is not that different to our regular art group gatherings each Monday, though coffee not wine, is the more usual beverage.”

The Valley New Art Group are artists who bring to their art rich life experience from other fields and professions. They have all come to their art in adulthood and are pursuing their passion.

Among the fifteen exhibiting artists, are well-known mosaic artist, Mary Francis showing a new side to her talent, Cessnock artist Gary Hamilton and a host of artists whose names are not so familiar, but whose work speak for themselves.

OPENING NIGHT: Friday 15 August from 6pm. All welcome.

EXHIBITION: Open weekends 10am – 4pm, from 16-31 August.

Robbie Long is a multi-instrumentalist who has covered miles of styles in his weird & wonderful career. Rob plays with local Newcastle acts, Bob Corbett and the Roograss band and also with Ngariki and the Dastardly Bastards. He is also fresh off a European tour with Aussie master of Vaudeville Mic Conway. She has collaborated with both covers and original bands such as Squeeze and Not Another Blonde. Overseas, Brooke has had the opportunity to perform in the TV Series Fresh Meat and UK Independent film industry. Brooke is currently the lead singer of Newcastle’s popular covers band Juicy Fruit.

In chilled out acoustic mode, the duo will cover a wide selection material from blues, jazz, and all ages of pop with some spontaneous instrumental action thrown in!

We’re looking forward to welcoming these two seasoned performers to our little stage in Laguna. As always, Rose’s heroic food will be on offer from 6pm and the bar will be open throughout.

There’s so much happening at Laguna this weekend, we thought a Sunday sesh was in order and this will be a cracker. After debuting at Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2012, & recording an unforgettable live album at the Gympie Muster later that year, Trainwreck Trio has since developed a reputation as the hardest live touring act in Australia.

Seeing Trainwreck Trio live is one of those life experiences audiences will be discussing with their grandchildren in decades to come: not to be missed under any circumstances! Whether you’re stopping by to pick up your purchases from the Laguna Art Show or just winding up your weekend with a quiet Sunday bevvy, this will be a lively arvy indeed.
