The High Andies are a trio led by Novocastrian steel guitarist Andy Costigan. He is joined in the endeavour by fellow Newcastle live music stalwarts Anthony Frampton, on the double bass, and Marty Burke playing guitar.
The heart of the matter is the soothing sound of traditional Hawaiian slide guitar tunes- ‘the breeze in the trees…’- but the ensemble will also, as was often the case with the Hawaiians, take the sliding steel into blusier and jazzier realms. ‘Hawaiian Jazz’ is as good a description for what goes on here with this lot as any.
The band sit happily in virtually any environment: They will contentedly provide atmosphere in a restaurant one night and then have no problem being the more focussed source of entertainment in a bar the next.
They’ve recently been a bit of a surprise hit at the festivals, performing at last years Dashville Skyline and returning to Groove in the Moo the year where, once again, they will operate as the backstage ‘greenroom band’- the band for the musicians- providing a much needed salve for the big- names returning from the main stage and whatever sonic atrocities they’ve just committed there…
The High Andies are performing for us here at GNTP this Good Friday the 19th of April. It’s going to be a very special night!
